Famous French actress Juliette Binoche has become the next president of the European Film Academy Board, replacing Polish director Agnieszka Holland, who plans to devote her time to making films, Variety reports.
Binoche was unanimously nominated by the board members of the European Film Academy after Holland decided to resign.
Agnieszka Holland said that she is not the type to step down easily, but she has come to the conclusion that she is a filmmaker first and foremost. And this is what she wants to focus on in the coming years.
She was the first woman to hold this position and served as chairman until 2019, and in 2021 she became president, succeeding German director Wim Wenders.
Juliette Binoche will officially take office on 1 May 2024. The role of the president of the European Film Academy is primarily symbolic.
Holland’s last film, The Green Border, won the Special Jury Prize in Venice, and she is currently preparing to shoot a biopic about Franz Kafka.
“This decision also makes us realise how much we owe to Agnieszka Holland’s work for our institution. On behalf of the European Film Academy, we would like to thank her for her tremendous support, strength and strong vision in all the functions she has performed within the Academy,” the board said in a statement.
Juliette Binoche is a famous French actress, artist and dancer.
She has won 15 awards in cinema and received an Oscar (1997) for her film The English Patient.
Binoche is the only woman to have won the Best Actress award at all three major European film festivals:
Palme d’Or in Cannes for Certified Copy (2010),
The Volpi Cup and the Pasinetti Award in Venice for Three Colours: Bleu/Three Colours: Blue (1993),
Silver Bear at the Berlinale for The English Patient (1996).
Today, Binoche can be seen in the film A Passion for the Taste of Things and the Apple TV+ series The New Look, where she plays Coco Chanel.
