The highest-grossing film in the world since the beginning of 2024 is the fantastic film Dune 2 by Denis Villeneuve. According to Variety, the film has already grossed $494.7 million worldwide, including $208 million in North America and $289.4 million in the rest of the world.
Based on the second half of Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel of the same name, the story continues the mythical quest of Timothy Chalamet’s Paul Atreides, who seeks safety in the wilderness after powerful royalty betrayed his family. Austin Butler, Florence Pugh and Christopher Walken join an extensive cast of Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin and Stellan Skarsgård.
After only 10 days in theatres, the second Dune film has surpassed the US box office gross of the first film, released last year ($108 million).
To date, the film’s gross has already exceeded the $500 million mark, a figure few films have achieved in the post-coronavirus pandemic era.
Due to quarantine restrictions, the original 2021 film Dune was released simultaneously in cinemas and on HBO Max, so ticket sales were suppressed by the hybrid streaming release.
Now, the next film has surpassed its predecessor, which grossed $433 million at the global box office.
Outside the US and Canada, Dune: Part 2 grossed $36 million in China, $32.8 million in the UK, $25 million in Germany, $24.9 million in France and $15.6 million in Australia.
The production of Dune: Part 2 cost US$190 million to produce and approximately US$100 million to promote to a global audience.
Despite the high price tag, the film retained the power necessary to justify these costs.
