Manchester United’s stunning 4-3 extra-time victory over Liverpool in the FA Cup quarter-finals has kept their hopes of winning the trophy alive.
The Red Devils opened the scoring with Scott McTominay’s effort, but before the break, Liverpool fought back and took the lead: first Alexis McAllister scored, and then Mohamed Salah scored another goal. In the second half, both teams were unable to score for a long time until Anthony sent the game into extra time at the end of the game.
The main time of the match ended with a score of 2:2. McTominay and Anthony scored for the Red Devils, while Jurgen Klopp’s team had McAllister and Salah.
Amad Diallo almost blew the roof off Old Trafford when he scored the winning goal in the 121st minute after Marcus Rashford had equalised eight minutes earlier, as the 12-time FA Cup winner booked a place in the semi-finals against League Two Coventry City.
“This could be the (key) moment when the team can really believe and also have the energy that they can do amazing things,” said Dutchman Ten Heg in delight.
“And I think if you can beat Liverpool the way we did, you can beat any opponent, so we have to prove it. I also said that on Friday at the pre-game press conference, and we did that today.”
“United are sixth in the league table, 17 points behind second-placed Liverpool, but more importantly, they are nine points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa in the race for a Champions League place next season, albeit with a game in hand.
Former United captain Roy Keane suggested that Sunday’s thriller could re-energise the team, especially the youngsters.
“Many players have never had to jump up and down like that at Old Trafford. The feel-good factor for those players could be huge for the rest of the season,” Keane told ITV.
Manchester United’s dramatic FA Cup victory over Liverpool attracted the biggest TV audience of the year at 8.6 million when the match went into extra time, the DailyMail reports.
ITV’s coverage of United vs Liverpool also attracted the largest audience for an FA Cup quarter-final since 2018. It was an action-packed week of major sporting events on free-to-air TV, culminating in a seven-goal FA Cup thriller.
As The Gaze previously reported, Ukraine qualified for the European Cyber Football Championship for the first time in its history.
