A Russian missile attack near the motorcade of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who was on his way to a meeting with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, marked the visit of the Greek Prime Minister to Odesa, Protothema reports. Ukraine’s navy says five people were killed. The visit was held in strict secrecy for security reasons. This was agreed upon in the Prime Minister’s last telephone conversation with the President of Ukraine at the end of January. A suitable date was sought through diplomatic channels.
In Odesa, the President of Ukraine and the Prime Minister of Greece paid tribute to the victims of a Russian drone strike on a residential building.
Mr Mitsotakis visited the port of Odesa, where he was received by the President of Ukraine and briefed on the work of the grain export corridor across the Black Sea and the Danube. He then went to the Odesa Port Authority where he met with Volodymyr Zelenskyy. This was followed by a meeting with the delegations of the two countries.
The two sides discussed cooperation in the energy sector, where Greece plays an important role in the European southern supply corridor and is developing a vertical connecting corridor to better meet the needs of the Balkans and Eastern Europe.
During the talks, the Greek Prime Minister reaffirmed his continued support for Ukraine, as well as his firm commitment to its European and Euro-Atlantic perspective.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis also noted Greece’s desire to help rebuild Ukraine, focusing on Odesa, a city of particular historical and cultural significance to Greece. He noted that Odesa is home to the Greek diaspora, with whom he had the opportunity to meet, and added that the city is now an example of resistance to the Russian invasion and occupation.
The Greek Prime Minister also confirmed his participation in the first Peace Summit on the implementation of the Ukrainian Peace Formula to be held in Switzerland.
